Are you a mom to be? Or are you already a mom with young children? Congratulations and welcome! You’re about to embark on an amazing journey. It can be hard, it can be rewarding, but most of all it will change your life forever.
One thing that has been helpful for me is knowing some of the hidden dangers of baby products so I’m sharing those today.
Moms need to know about these things because we want what’s best for our babies and not just go by what others say or think is best for them without doing some research ourselves first.
As a mom, you know that there are so many products out there for our babies. When you decide to purchase something for them, it’s important to read the labels and look at all of the ingredients on the product. But what if you can’t find anything? What if everything looks good?
You may not realize it but some products have chemicals in them that could harm your child! These products might include soaps, lotions, shampoos, and baby powders and they might be used several times a day. We want to help keep our little ones safe from these hidden dangers of baby products by giving parents access to this list of toxic substances they should never buy their babies.
Have you ever taken the time to read the ingredients listing for a bottle of baby lotion or shampoo? How would you feel if you found out that the products you have been using on your sweet baby are actually a witch’s brew of dangerous ingredients? Most parents would be very unhappy. They might feel as though they had been duped, and rightly so. Many parents put faith in the companies behind conventional baby products because it never enters their minds that products made specifically for babies could be harmful.
Common Harmful Ingredients
There are many hidden dangers in baby products that can expose your child to harmful ingredients. One of the most common is formaldehyde, which has been linked to cancer and asthma. You should also look out for phthalates (linked to reproductive issues), lead acetate (causes developmental delays) and benzyl alcohol (ingredient behind some cough syrups). These chemicals aren’t just a danger during infancy; they’re present in other areas of life as well so be sure you know what’s lurking within all those children’s clothes, bedding accessories, furniture pieces and toys
Unfortunately, there are many baby products available today that have questionable ingredients. Some of these ingredients include synthetic perfumes, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Talc, and Parabens.
But what are they and why are they bad?
• Parabens are actually preservatives that have estrogenic qualities. They have produced abnormal hormonal effects following application on laboratory rodents, particularly male, resulting in decreased testosterone levels and other abnormalities. They have also been found to accumulate in the breast tissue of women with breast cancer.
• Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS for short is an ingredient that gives a product like a shampoo or liquid soap its foaming ability. It is a known skin irritant and in fact when testing new a healing ointment or crème, SLS is the irritant they first rub on the skin to test the healing properties of their new product. SLS can penetrate and be retained in the eyes, brain, heart, and liver with potentially harmful effects according to the journal of the American College of Toxicology. In a baby product, SLS might cause rashes, eczema or other skin irritations. It is shocking that baby products contain such a harsh ingredient. To add further insult, products containing this ingredient are sometimes labeled as “natural” or organic because SLS is a detergent derived from coconut oil.
• Synthetic perfumes or fragrances can contain hundreds of chemicals. Some, such as methylene chloride are carcinogenic and others might cause headaches, dizziness, coughing, vomiting and skin irritation.
• Talc is white-gray mineral powder used as a baby powder. Moms might use it to keep their baby’s skin smooth and dry but unfortunately term long-term use can produce the same effects as those of asbestos.
These ingredients hardly sound appropriate for tender baby skin. So what can you do to avoid these dangerous baby products?
Sadly, the majority of baby products on store shelves today are loaded with harmful chemicals. It’s scary when you look at what is in these products and realize that they can cause lasting damage to your child.
There are many hidden dangers lurking in the baby aisle of your favorite store. If you are a new mom, or know someone who is expecting, make sure they’re aware of these potential hazards so that their little one stays healthy and happy for years to come! The most alarming danger might be chemicals found on some products we use every day- think about what’s going into our children’s mouths when they put everything in there before tasting it with their hands? Not only do these chemicals pose an immediate risk to infants’ health, but also may lead to chronic problems later in life. Be wary of ingredients like BPA and phthalates which can disrupt hormones throughout the body and cause long term developmental delays.
It’s important to be smart about what you buy for your baby. If you are considering a product with suspicious sounding ingredients, do some research and make sure it is safe. Stay away from products that have these chemicals in them as they can cause harm over time and lead to long term health problems. We want the best for our babies so we urge everyone reading this post to take care of their little ones by looking at ingredient lists before making any purchases!
